Built in 1908 and costing near $400,000, The Goldfield Hotel was opulent, featuring nearly 150 rooms, all carpeted with many of the rooms including a private bathroom.
The town of Goldfield was established during the Gold Rush that took place in the area, with more that $80 million dollars retrieved from nearby mines.
It should go without saying that the wealth attracted visitors to the town, including both the elite and the unscrupulous. Many of those attracted to the area, stayed at the Goldfield Hotel.
As the case with most boomtowns, when the gold was mined out, the town of Goldfield dried up as well. George Wingfield relinquished the hotel and a series of buyers followed. The final owner, Red Roberts, has left the old building much as it was and his grandson and manager has been known to open the Hotel for paranormal investigation and historical tours.
The hotel is said to be haunted by George Wingfield’s mistress, a woman known as Elizabeth. As the story goes, Elizabeth became pregnant with George’s child, causing him to fear that if the news of the pregnancy got out, it would cost him his marriage. George took disparate measures to eliminate the problem, supposedly locking Elizabeth in one of the rooms of his hotel and chaining her to a radiator until she gave birth. It is unknown what happened to his mistress and child, although it has been rumored that they were both murdered and the baby’s body was concealed by discarding it in a mineshaft.
Visitors to the site have reported the smell of tobacco smoke as well as several other apparitions. One is said to be a woman who hung herself, and another angrier spirit who reportedly clutches a large knife.
The Goldfield Hotel is located at 69-79 Columbia Avenue, Goldfield, NV 89013.
