Mansfield Prison is the home to numerous paranormal phenomena, shadow figures lurk around the corners, growling can be heard from an unknown source, the rattling of chains echoes from the building, and the peeling of church bells is often detected.

As if that isn’t horrifying enough, disembodied voices call out, phantom smells linger in the air and orbs are visible throughout the old prison.

Previously a Reformatory, the facility opened in 1896, though it wasn’t used as a maximum security prison until the 1970s.

Originally the Reformatory operated as an intermediate facility, accepting inmates whose crimes were not severe enough to be sentenced to the main Ohio prison system.

By the 1960s, the conditions were so horrendous that the structure was converted to maximum security. Over 200 prisoners lost their lives due to fighting, beatings, and punishments.

The facility was closed down in 1990 after prisoners filed a lawsuit over the deplorable conditions within the prison walls.

Nowadays, the prison is best known for its paranormal occurrences.

Visitors to the cell blocks have reported that they have been touched, bitten, and physically assaulted, including having been pushed down the stairs.

For anyone looking for a truly chilling experience, Mansfield Prison will surely send shivers down your spine.

The Reformatory is located at 100 Reformatory Rd, Mansfield, OH 44905
